Matthew James Mitchell

December 21, 2003 – August 25, 2026

Child of God. Son. Brother. Friend. Teammate. Red Raider.

Matthew James Mitchell lived only 22 years, but the impact of his life cannot be measured in years.

To know Matthew was to know someone who genuinely loved people. He never met a stranger. He had an incredible ability to make people feel included, especially those who might otherwise have been overlooked. Whether you knew him as a son, brother, best friend, teammate, fraternity brother, coworker, classmate, coach, or fellow Red Raider, chances are Matthew made you feel like you mattered.

But above all those things, Matthew was a Child of God.

That is the legacy we want people to remember most.

Matthew’s Story

Matthew James Mitchell
12.21.2003 – 08.25.2026

Forever a Red Raider.
Forever loved.
Forever our son.
Forever a Child of God.

Matthew lived 22 years. His impact will last generations.

Want to know more about God?

Matthew’s journey changed our family forever—and it changed my relationship with God.

Through the darkest days of Matthew’s cancer battle, I began to understand faith in a way I never had before. I believe God had been preparing my heart long before I knew the battle our family would face.

If Matthew’s story has made you curious about God, Jesus, faith, or how someone can continue believing even when prayers aren't answered the way we desperately wanted, I invite you to follow my journey at Faith According to Kevin.

I don't have all the answers. I'm simply a father sharing what God has shown me through loving Matthew, fighting alongside him, losing him, and learning that faith can remain even in the middle of heartbreak.

If Matthew’s story leads even one person closer to God, then his story is still changing lives.
