Reflections on Matthew
Words from those whose lives were touched by Matthew
Katie Brown, PHD
Matthew Mitchell was an undergraduate and master’s sport management student - who spent years battling brain cancer while finishing both degrees. To say he was special is an understatement. He showed up, he did more than the work, always added humor to his presentations, uplifted those around him, and made us better for having known him.
I know he is loved by so many, and I want to add how much our Texas Tech family is hurting right now for his family and we are so sad for us. I’ve said before that our students are the epitome of leaving things better than they found them, but gosh Matthew left everyone and every place so much better than he found it.
To our students who knew and loved Matthew - we are here for you any time you need. To those who didn’t get the opportunity to meet Matthew, you will be able to feel and see it in the department in the goodness of others that we hope and spirit we will carry with us every day here. Our wish is that you all go out into the world and do great things, be kind, and make an impact somehow (no matter how small!).

There are no words I can really say to make this better or to adequately honor Matthew but we love you buddy and we will miss you.
Please consider making a donation to his endowment fund and let's keep his legacy alive.
